Since 1983

The Canadian Hispanic Congress (CHC) is a national organization established to represent the interests of more than one million Spanish-speaking people, multiple generations, with origins in more than twenty different countries, now living in Canada. 

The CHC was incorporated federally on August 15th, 1983 as a non-profit corporation and the name “Canadian Hispanic Congress” was selected over others because it establishes that the use of the Spanish language is the common element that brings together organizations and individuals with origins in more than 20 different countries.

The purpose of the CHC is:

1) To represent Hispanic Canadians and defend their well being in Canada .

b) To coordinate the work of Hispanic organizations in Canada.

c) To strive to assure members of the Hispanic community of full participation in the political, economic, social and cultural life of Canada.

d) To nurture, strengthen and extended Hispanic cultures based on Hispanic traditions and beliefs.

e) To render assistance to new Hispanic immigrants adjusting to life in Canada.

f) To support organizations and associations of youth of Hispanic origin with reference to Hispanic history, culture and national traditions.

g) To increase Canadian society’s awareness of the fact that although the members of the Hispanic community are bonded by the use of Spanish as a common language their cultures, traditions, and beliefs are as diverse and different as the countries of the their origin.

h) To persuade the Canadian government and its agencies to recognize the autonomy of the various individual Hispanic communities and their need to operate as such.

i) To familiarize Canadian society with the contributions of the Hispanic peoples to the culture and civilization of the world.

j) To strengthen the bonds between Hispanic Canadians among themselves and other Canadians based on official the policy of multiculturalism.

k) To defend the name of the Hispanic nations and to propagate their historic truth.

l) To propagate and defend the rights of the Hispanic Nations to independence and full freedom within the idea of the declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations. 

m) To maintain contact with the Hispanic Nations while retaining full independence from political influence.

n) To receive, acquire and hold donations, gifts, legacies and bequests to be used to devoted to the sole purpose of the attainment of the aforesaid objects.

OUR HISTORY

Objectives

The main objectives of the CHC are to coordinate and help develop the efforts of Hispanic organizations across Canada that work with Hispanic individuals, with the purpose of ensuring the full participation of Hispanics in the economic, political, financial, cultural and social life of Canada.

Mission

To coordinate, help develop, promote and facilitate the work of organizations that work with the Hispanic community in Canada, actively promoting the interests, rights and aspirations of Hispanics at the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government, and motivating and influencing their involvement in Canadian society. 

Vision

To help increase the well-being of all Hispanics in Canada, through their active participation in all aspects of Canadian society.

Our Focus

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The focus of the CHC is the development of the community through its organizations. To this effect the CHC works with organizations that can stimulate the participation and deliver the best services and activities that engage the community and promote its growth and development in all areas, including arts, culture, sports, business, education, communication and more for people of all ages and stages of life.

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

Since its inception the CHC has worked and continues to work with all levels of government and has made numerous important representations on behalf of the Hispanic community on issues of national and international concern.

CIVIC PARTICIPATION

The CHC has always encouraged, continues to encourage and support the participation of Hispanics in the civic and electoral process of Canada as the municipal, provincial and federal levels.
